BUTUAN CITY (MindaNews / 25March) – Siargao Island is living up to its reputation as Mindanao’s outdoor sports competition mecca.

Other than its renowned surfing, Siargao also hosts various outdoor sports events like mountain biking, triathlon and fun runs. On top of that, it regularly hosts the International Game Fishing Tournament, which will be held on April 11 to 15 in the town of Pilar.

Local and international fishing enthusiasts and anglers from Manila, Cebu, Davao as well as Japan, Australia, Russia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Europe and the United States are expected to compete for the island’s biggest catch.

Various prizes are at stake depending on the species and size caught.

Several activities are also line up, including a cultural show, media tour, dance and bikini competitions.

The event is a joint project of Rep. Francisco Matugas and Gov. Sol Matugas in cooperation with national and local government agencies like the Department of Tourism, the provincial government of Surigao del Norte, local government of host municipality Pilar, and the local business sector.

There are daily flights from Cebu City to Siargao and regular fast crafts from Surigao City if one is coming from Mindanao mainland. (Ramon Jorge B. Sarabosing / MindaNews)
